The city of Tempe is in Maricopa County, Arizona. It's a part of the East Valley section of the Phoenix metro area. Tempe had a population of 161,719 in 2010. The US airways headquarters and the main campus of Arizona State University are located here. The most well known area of the city is the Mill Avenue District in downtown Tempe. The district has many restaurants, shops and nightclubs. City attractions like the ASU Art Museum and ASU Gammage Auditorium are also on Mill Ave.

The ASU museum displays over 12,000 objects. The museum is housed in two facilities: the Nelson Fine Arts Center and the new Ceramics Research Center. The Art in America magazine called it the single most impressive venue for contemporary art in Arizona. Through its innovative programming, the ASU Art Museum is able to serve a diverse community of artists and audiences. A major attraction of the city is The Tempe Town Lake. Millions of visitors come here each year to enjoy the boating, fishing, picnic areas and cultural events.

More than 100 days of events happen at the town lake. These events include the Ironman Arizona, a triathlon event in which top athletes from around the world compete with each other; Cardboard Boat Regatta, where recyclable crafts set sail on a short course; 4th of July, the largest fireworks display and community festival in the state. Tempe Town Lake's Splash Playground is specially made for children; here they can enjoy in the pool.

One of the nation's largest New Year's Eve parties, the Insight Fiesta Bowl Block Party, is also hosted by Tempe. Typically, a national band heads a concert, along with several other local and national bands.

The Arizona Mills shopping mall, one of the largest malls in the state, is in Tempe. The city also has the first branch of Arizona IKEA. Just north of Tempe Town Lake is the Tempe Marketplace, a large open air mall featuring live music and water and laser shows. The Mill Avenue offers a different shopping environment to malls. The district provides an environment in which shoppers walk between specialty boutiques, local businesses and nationally-known retailers instead of getting it all in an indoor mall.

Tempe is the most densely-populated city in Arizona. Bus routes and the METRO Light rail system that serves Downtown Tempe and Arizona State University are operated by Valley Metro. The City of Tempe operates a free neighborhood circulator service called Orbit. Over the years, Tempe has not only expanded to become the seventh largest city in Arizona, but has also developed a strong economy based on commerce, technology and tourism.
