Phoenix is the capital of the state of Arizona. In terms of population it is the fifth largest city in the United States. The Phoenix metro area includes about 23 cities and towns and is the 12th largest metro area in the US with 4,281,899 residents.

Phoenix city is divided into 15 urban villages. The city council appoints a planning committee for each village. Main districts and areas of the city include Biltmore Area, Arcadia, Sunnyslope, Ahwatukee, West Phoenix, North Phoenix, South Phoenix Downtown and Midtown.

Phoenix offers many indoor and outdoor activities to visitors. There are museums, theaters, restaurants, resorts, spas and golf courses. The city's warm sunny weather and mild winters helps in bringing tourists to the city. The climate of Phoenix is hotter than any of the other major cities in the country. The city also benefits a lot from its golf industry.

Phoenix valley has a number of museums including the Phoenix Art Museum, Heard Museum, Arizona Science Center, Phoenix Museum of History, the Pueblo Grande Museum and Cultural Park. Heard Museum is one of the most popular museums in Phoenix, with 250,000 annual visitors. The 260 piece contemporary jewelry collection of Mareen Allen Nichols, the 437 historic Hopi kachina dolls collection by Barry Goldwater, and an exhibit about the 19th century boarding school experiences of Native Americans in are some of its top collections.

There are several performing arts venues in the city. The Phoenix Symphony Hall is one such venue, where Arizona Opera and Ballet Arizona perform often. Concert venues include the US Airways Center and the Dodge Theater in downtown Phoenix. Local arts have grown a lot in Phoenix since 2002, with the help of the Artlink program. In April 2009, artist Janet Echelman inaugurated her 100-foot tall sculpture. The sculpture shows the 'invisible patterns' of desert wind. It's suspended above the new Phoenix Civic Space, a two-city-block park in the middle of downtown.

Phoenix has more than 30 public, private and resort golf courses. The Phoenix Country Club and Arizona Biltmore Country Club are just two of the many well known, established golf courses that lie within the city. Golf courses that are owned by the city include Cave Creek Golf Course and Papago Golf Course, which is considered one of the top city courses in the country. Wildfire Golf Club and Arizona Grand Resort are parts of large resorts designed for families and tournaments.

The cuisine that most residents prefer to eat is Mexican, and restaurants offering Mexican food are present all over the city. The city has a large Hispanic population, but in recent years people from all over the country and some from other countries have come to the city. As a result, international food, like Brazilian, French and Korean has become more common.

There are water parks and recreational parks in an around the city. The water parks help the residents to beat the heat during hot summer days. The Arizona Grand Resort in Phoenix has the Oasis Water Park. The desert landscape has been preserved in Phoenix by creating parks in areas that could be developed for residential and commercial purposes. An example of this is the world's largest municipal park, the South Mountain Park, which spans across an area of 16,500 acres. Another notable park is the Papago Park, which contains The Desert Botanical Garden, the Phoenix Zoo and golf courses.

Phoenix is the largest city of Arizona, and over the years it has become a hub for business, industry and culture in the Southwestern United States.
